Why You Should Do A Social Media Detox

Social Media Detox

Social media has become a huge part of modern life. As a blogger, it's an integral tool for me to connect with like minded people and share my content. People use social media to speak to loved ones, share their humour, promote their businesses and rally support for different causes. There are so many beneficial aspects to social media but, as I'm sure we all know, it can also have negative effect. So here's why you should do a social media detox right now!

My Experience

In mid-2015, just before I began blogging, I had social media detox. I was going through a rough time in my life and quite honestly, there were things I did not want to see social media. I just avoided it all together until I felt like I was in a place to deal with it. I now appreciate and enjoy social media so much more.

You will feel more free

When I came back to social media I felt as though a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I didn't need to be posting constantly and it was alright if I wasn't seeing what other people were doing. I had become much less dependent on my phone. I no longer needed it in my hand 24/7.

You will have more time

I think most of us are guilty of checking our phone first thing in the morning. How else will we keep up to date and be ready to start our day? But if you set down your phone every once in a while you find that you have so much more time to do things and increase your productivity.

You will improve your confidence

Once you stop compulsively checking what everyone else is doing with their lives, you will feel more secure and confident in yourself. Social media is a snapshot of the highlights of peoples' lives. When you stop comparing yourself to these highlights you will learn that what you have is actually pretty great. Sure, you may not be sitting on a yacht in Greece, but you may have just had great success at work or achieved a personal goal of your own.

In no way do I condemn social media, in fact I currently use it every day. But if you're feeling overwhelmed by it all I definitely recommend you try go without, even if it's just for a little while. Maybe even just once a week! I have had lasting benefits from my few months offline and am a happier person today because of it.

Have you ever done a social media detox?

  1. I haven't done a full social media detox before as I rarely use Facebook as it is. But at the end of 2014 I had a lot going on in my life and every time I posted on Twitter or Instagram I felt like I was being judged by horrible people in my life so I just stopped posting for around 3 months. It was great, I did other things on the internet that I wouldn't usually and met new great people that didn't judge me. After the break I returned feeling so much better and more confident with my posts.

  3. Not sure if it counts because I can't completely abandon social media due to my day job. But during weekends, I stay away from technology as much as possible. It somehow allows me to connect with the real life, real people.
